What Does Money Really Have to do With It?

As much as I'd hate to admit it, money really has quite a bit to do with schooling. The money a school receives is what is used to purchase desks, books, school supplies, etc. Without this money, where can we expect to get the things we need to help educate our students?  In some schools, teachers have already taken the initiative to buy and provide supplies and tools for their class to use to learn. This is very sad, considering these wonderful people are taking money out of their own paychecks to provide extra helpful tools to aid in educating their students. There's a huge achievement gap between low funded and high funded schools and ultimately in extremely disappointing. Every child deserves equal opportunity to education, regardless of what funds are available at that school.

Money is a resource that is always going to be in demand and unfortunately without it, we can't expect to get very far. Although it may sound like a very far fetched idea, I believe all schools should be funded equally to ensure the proper education of each and every one of our students in school. Students will be granted the same opportunities as their peers in different districts and the drive to learn will (hopefully) be stronger in every student by eliminating the socioeconomic differences.

In the future I hope to use my role as an educator to push these ideas forward in my classroom and school, a change no matter how big always has to start small!

  1. Hey Ana,
It is sad that teachers in lower income districts, that are already making less than teachers in higher income districts have to pay for materials out of pocket just to try and give their students an equal opportunity. Its great that they do that though because if they don't who will? The policies of how school funds are disbursed may not change but we can still do our best to help our students. Of course I want every child to have a good education but our society is class bias and race bias but when it comes to children they should have a fighting chance. One article I really liked about state funding is about how poorly Texas educates its public schools in relation to how fast our economy is growing and basically, as a state we could do better but we aren't because of legislation.

    1. Hi Leya! I agree, it is sad. It makes me hopeful though, to see that you and most of our peers share the same outlook on what equal education and equal opportunity should be. I really appreciate you linking the article as well, it's absolutely unbelievable to read how our state has let down and continues to let down our students in public schools. Thank you for your response!

  2. Ana! I completely agree with everything you said. It is such a shame how little teachers are paid yet they’re still required to take money out of their paychecks to even offer their students materials and opportunities to learn. A pencil costs 10¢ in todays retail value. As low as that is, some teachers can’t even afford to purchase enough pencils for their whole class with everything else they are forced to provide with the little to no help they receive from their school district. It is really sad to see that we pay all this money in taxes, and it’s all being spend on everything else other then the children who will lead the future. I hope that our future students are granted equal opportunities of proper learning in our classrooms. I stand with you to push these ideas in the future. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Hi Regan! Thank you for giving an example of what a teachers situation looks like. While it is sad yes, it's actually pretty annoying to know that our tax money isn't being put to anything useful like supplies for students or teachers in schools. Thanks for the response!
