Why Teach?

Becoming a teacher was not always the plan I had for myself. Before I chose Education as my major, I was deeply invested in pursuing Pharmacy as a career. I was given the opportunity to work in a chemistry lab my sophomore year here at Texas State and was later asked to become an Instructional Assistant for a General Chemistry lab. It was when I began instructing a lab, that I knew teaching was meant for me. Being an asset in a student’s learning and academic career is a huge responsibility no matter how big of a role you play. I made it my goal to be a positive and engaging source of learning and the feedback I received from my students made my role much more meaningful. My Instructional Assistant position has provided me with the opportunity to begin modeling the qualities of an educator I plan to become.

Everyone remembers their favorite teacher although for me I remember my favorite subject. Science has always been second nature for me and was a class I was the most confident in and genuinely enjoyed. I was very blessed to have science teachers who made learning in the classroom natural and fun instead of a chore. I want to teach middle school science because I developed my love for science in middle school. Science is a subject with many branches, that is always changing. In the world of science, the learning never stops. There are always new discoveries being made, questions to ask, and something new to learn. Science is a subject for those who are never satisfied and want to learn more, those who aren’t afraid to ask 100 questions. I hope to one day encourage young minds to ask as many questions as they can think of, crave knowledge, and learn.

My favorite Teacher of Tiktok is @ms.spacecase. I love how she shows her students art work and pieces and always chooses to view it in a positive light no matter the appearance of the art. In once of her videos she showed her students artwork from the beginning of the semester compared to their work at the end of the semester and the comparison was jaw dropping. Every single one of her students improved in many ways over the weeks and it was amazing. You can truly see the love and passion she has for her job through the phone screen.

  1. Big difference from pharmacy to teaching. Big difference. So glad you made the switch. I am confident that you will be glad, too. I just love you mad scientist theme. Asking questions is vital and key to learning. It is always my goal to invite as many questions as possible in all of my students.
